The average pint in Chester costs £5.07. The median is £5.10. But if you know where to go, you can pay less than half that.

The Square Bottle takes the crown this month at £2.45 for a pint of Doom Bar. The Shropshire Arms and The Mill at Upton are close behind, both under £3.

The Wetherspoons question

The Bull and Stirrup Hotel — Chester's Wetherspoons — comes in at £2.99 for a Murphy's and £3.49 for Coors. It's cheap, but it's not the cheapest. The Square Bottle, Shropshire Arms, and Mill at Upton all beat it on headline price. That said, the Bull and Stirrup has the widest selection of budget pints under £4 of any single venue — you've got Murphy's, Coors, Greenmoor, and guest ales all in that range.

Best value beyond the cheapest price

The cheapest pint isn't always the best pint. A few venues worth knowing about that balance price and quality:

The Pied Bull — £3.45 for their house Greenmoor and £3.65 for Chester Aged Honey Ale, Guinness, or John Smiths. They brew their own beer on-site, which means the house ales are both cheap and fresh. Genuinely one of the best value pints in the city when you factor in quality.

The Shropshire Arms — Six different pints under £3.55. It's a no-frills local but the beer is well-kept and the prices are consistently among the lowest in the city centre.

The Mill at Upton — Slightly out of the centre but worth the walk. Draught bitter at £2.95 and a regular bitter at £3.70. Good pub, proper atmosphere.

• The Square Bottle remains the cheapest in the city at £2.45
• The Pied Bull's house ales continue to offer the best quality-to-price ratio
