What Chester Searches For on a Night Out — Three Months of Real Google Data
We pulled three months of real Google search data for Out In Chester — more than 14,000 searches — to see exactly what the city types in when it's deciding where to eat and drink. Here's what Chester's really looking for, and what it means if you run a venue.
Every night, all over Chester, someone is standing on Watergate Street or scrolling on the sofa asking Google the same question: where should we go? We can see what they type. Over the last three months, Out In Chester turned up in Google's search results more than 14,000 times — the overwhelming majority of it right here in the UK, and almost two-thirds of those searches on a phone, most likely from someone already out and deciding on the spot.
We went through every one of them. These are real Google searches — pulled straight from our own Search Console data, not a survey, not guesswork, not a hunch. They are the actual words Chester types into Google when it's hungry, thirsty, or working out where the night goes next. Here's what the city is really looking for. And if you run a bar, pub, café or restaurant, it's worth reading twice, because the pattern is unmistakable.
The single most common request? Your menu.
More than anything else, Chester searches for menus. The most-searched term of the whole lot was "olive tree brasserie chester menu". Right behind it came "rio brazilian steakhouse chester menu", "the cross keys chester menu", "the mount inn chester menu", "watergates bar menu", "porta tapas bar menu" — dozens of variations, venue after venue, all wanting the same thing: to see what's on, and what it costs, before they commit.
Look closer and the price intent is even more naked: "bull and stirrup chester menu prices", "pied bull menu with prices", "rio chester prices", "panda mami chester prices". People are checking the bill before they leave the house.
The lesson for venues is blunt: your menu is your shop window, and people are looking through it online long before they reach your door. If your prices are hard to find, out of date, or buried in a Facebook photo from two summers ago, you're losing the decision at the only moment that counts.
"Happy hour" is the phrase that pulls hardest
Of every search we appeared for, the one people actually clicked most was "happy hour chester" — and it converted at nearly 30%, many times the rate of an average search. Add "chester happy hour", "pub happy hour", "cocktail happy hour near me" and "happy hour saturday", and a clear picture forms: a defined, findable happy hour is one of the most powerful things a Chester venue can put online.
It fits exactly what we found when we looked at the real cost of a night out: people aren't just looking for a drink, they're looking for a reason and a window. Give them one they can find on Google and you've won the "shall we, shan't we" before it's even a conversation.
Chester is deal-hunting
Underneath the venue names runs a steady drumbeat of pure value-seeking: "pub offers in chester", "2 for 1 cocktails chester", "2 for 1 meals chester", "restaurant offers chester", "midweek offer chester", "chester eating out deals", "best pub deals near me", "cheap pints near me". A whole slice of the city won't pick a venue until it knows where the deal is — which is precisely why we keep Chester's real offers in one place.
The vibe decides the venue
People rarely search for "a pub". They search for a specific pub-shaped thing, and each one is someone who has already made up their mind about what they want:
- Dogs: "dog friendly pub chester", "dog friendly pubs in chester", even "is brewski dog friendly".
- Beer gardens: "beer garden chester", "pub garden chester", "best beer garden near me".
- The match: "pubs near me sky sports", "football pub near me", "watch live sport chester", "sports bar near me".
- Proper ale: "real ale pubs in chester", "cask ales chester", "craft beer chester".
- A bit of Ireland: "irish bar chester", "irish pubs in chester".
If your beer garden, your dog bowl, your eight cask lines or your Saturday football aren't mentioned anywhere Google can read them, you're invisible to exactly the person who'd have loved you.
The "right now" crowd
Some of the most valuable searches are the most impatient: "bars open now", "bars open now near me", "cocktails near me", "late night hangout places near me". These aren't people planning next Friday — they're deciding in the next ten minutes, phone in hand, ready to walk somewhere. Whoever turns up in that search gets the round.
Undecided — and up for grabs
Plenty of Chester still searches by brand: "wetherspoons chester" and its many cousins ("how many wetherspoons in chester", "is there a wetherspoons in chester town centre") come up again and again. But just as many arrive with no name in mind at all — "pub in chester", "bars in chester", "best bars chester", "places to drink in chester", "new bars in chester".
That second group is the whole game. They haven't chosen yet. The venue that shows up — with a clear name, a real menu, an obvious offer and the right vibe attached — is the one they pick.
If you run a Chester venue
Here's three months of data in four lines:
- People decide online, on their phone, before they arrive.
- The first thing they want is your menu and your prices.
- Happy hours, deals and a clear vibe — dog-friendly, beer garden, sport, real ale — are what turn a search into a visit.
- A big chunk of them haven't chosen a venue yet when they start typing.
